The Supernatural Church (Part 1): Prophecy Fulfilled
In this week’s blog post, we answer the question ‘What is the Church?’. Whether you are already a believer or you are ‘on the fence’ it is crucial for all of us to understand the foundation of the church.
What Does It Mean to Be the Church?
Many people associate the church with a physical building or a particular tradition, but Jesus redefined the concept. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus declared, “...on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Here, Jesus uses a play on words—calling Peter “Petros” (a stone) and referring to Himself as “Petra” (the massive rock, the foundation). While people and leaders may come and go, Christ remains the cornerstone, the anchor of our faith.
The early church thrived not because of impressive structures, but because of their devotion to Christ and to one another. Acts 2:42-44 describes how they “devoted themselves to the apostles’’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers... And all who believed were together and had all things in common.” This unity was so compelling that 3,000 souls were added in a single day!
Why Unity in Christ Matters
One of the most attractive qualities of the early church—and any church today—is genuine unity. When the world sees believers on one accord, it draws people in. Division repels, butunity rooted in Christ invites. When we are on one accord, there is an undeniable miraculous movement —look at what happened in Acts—3,000 people were added because of unity in the Spirit.
But this unity isn’t just an emotional bond; it is grounded in truth. The Holy Spirit, called the Spirit of Truth, keeps us anchored in Christ and brings us together as one body. Without Christ as our foundation, any community—even one that calls itself a church—cannot stand the storms of life.
How Can You Anchor Your Life in Christ?
Devote Yourself to Christ: Like the early believers, commit to learning from Scripture, seeking fellowship, and prioritizing prayer.
Pursue Unity: Let go of divisions and commit to building up the body of Christ. Look for opportunities to serve, encourage, and reconcile.
Stay Anchored in the Rock: When storms come—and they will—remember that Jesus is your foundation. Stand on His promises, and you will not be put to shame.
Invite Others: Share the hope you have in Christ with those around you. Your unity and love may be what draws someone else to faith.
Reflect and Respond: Ask yourself, “Is my life anchored in Jesus, or am I trying to build on something less secure?” If you have never made the decision to follow Christ, now is the time.
Conclusion
The true church is not a building, but a supernatural community built upon Jesus Christ, the unshakeable Rock. No matter what challenges you face, remember that the only foundation that lasts is Jesus Christ. When believers anchor themselves in Him, they find unity, purpose, and power that the gates of hell cannot overcome.
The church is God’s idea, and He invites you to be a part of His eternal family. As you devote yourself to Him and to His people, you’ll experience supernatural strength, unshakeable hope, and true belonging.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus Christ, our cornerstone and anchor. Help us to devote ourselves to You, to pursue unity with one another, and to stand strong through every storm. Fill us with Your Spirit of Truth and empower us to be a supernatural church that draws others to Your love. For those who are seeking, reveal Yourself as the only way, the only truth, and the only life. We give You all the glory. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
