The Visible and Invisible Church: Discovering God's True Family

Today we begin this blog by asking the question: “What is the Church?”. Perhaps this question might be on the lips of non-believers, but should believers also ask and reflect on this question? This week’s post explores the difference between the visible and invisible church, what it means to be truly part of God’s family, and how your faith can impact the world.

So, What is the Church?

If we should draw from passages like Matthew 16:13-19, John 10, and Acts 2, it should become clear that the Church is not merely a building, a tradition, or a social club—it is the redeemed people of God, the body of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit.

In a recent sermon at Oasis of Hope Ministries,Senior Pastor Dr. Braxton Henderson emphasized the distinction between the visible church (what the world sees—buildings, gatherings, rituals, and outward professions of faith) and the invisible church (those truly born again, sealed by God’s Spirit, living out transformed lives). The true Church is not defined by labels or attendance but by a supernatural relationship with Jesus, evidenced by changed hearts and lives. If we reflect and live this truth, our response to the question “What is the Church?” must be more than verbal but of action and demonstration through our daily interactions.

The Characteristics of True Church

These four (4) main characteristics will help us understand the true Church:

  1. Visible vs. Invisible Church
The visible church includes everyone who professes faith and participates in church life, but not all are truly saved. The invisible church consists of those genuinely redeemed and sealed by God ( Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43).

  2. Jesus Owns the Church
Jesus said, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18) The Church belongs to Christ; He paid the price, and He alone claims ownership.

  3. Unity in Christ
“For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body... and all were made to drink of one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13) Regardless of background, all believers are united in Christ.

  4. Evidence of the True Church
The mark of the invisible church is not perfection but transformation: a new heart, love for God, and obedience to His Word (2 Corinthians 5:17).

How can we LIVE a life that reflects the True Church?

The Heavenly Father and the bible must serve as our GPS system; a system that is accessible to all. (Read this post for this application).

  • Examine Your Faith:Don’t settle for outward religion or tradition. Ask yourself: Do I truly know Jesus, or have I just adopted the ‘Christian’ label? Is my life being transformed by His Spirit? Do I have the seal of the blood of Jesus?

  • Live Out Loud:Be bold in your faith. The world is loud about its beliefs; let’s make the goodness of God visible through our words and actions.

  • Pursue Unity and Discipleship:Find a church family where you can grow, be discipled, and help others encounter Jesus. Remember, it’s not about the building but the people of God together.

  • Be Grateful for Grace:Rejoice that salvation is a gift—received by grace through faith in Christ (John 3:16). Let gratitude fuel your obedience and love for God.

  • Pray for True Transformation:Seek the Holy Spirit’s work in your heart. Pray for a new heart, a deeper love for God, and for your life to bear visible fruit of invisible faith.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,Thank You for making a way for us to be part of Your true family—not just in name, but in reality. Help us move beyond tradition and outward appearance to embrace a living relationship with Jesus. Transform our hearts by Your Spirit. Make us bold witnesses of Your love and truth. Unite us as one body, and let our lives reflect the goodness of Christ to a watching world. May we walk in obedience and gratitude, knowing the Church belongs to You and will never pass away. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
