Awaken to God's Calling: Living Alert

Do you ever feel as if you are sleepwalking through life, navigating challenges only when necessary? Do you experience a sense of spiritual calmness, yet find yourself not fully awake?

On a recent Mother's Day at Oasis of Hope Ministries, Pastor Emerita Catherine delivered a powerful message that stopped us in our tracks. Using a simple but striking visual—a volunteer wearing a blindfold and eye mask, curled up comfortably—she illustrated a sobering truth: many of us are spiritually asleep, missing divine opportunities right in front of us.

The Damascus Road Wake-Up Call

Pastor Emerita took us to Acts 26:17-18, where Jesus commissions Paul with these words: "I will rescue you from both your own people and the Gentiles. Yes, I am sending you to the Gentiles to open their eyes so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God."

Paul's transformation didn't happen gradually. On the road to Damascus, God knocked him down so hard that his spiritual blinders literally fell off. One moment he was persecuting Christians; the next, he heard heaven's voice and his entire life trajectory changed.

The question is: Are we spiritually alert enough to recognize when God is calling us?

Where Are Your Blinders?

The challenge is for us to examine specific areas where we might be wearing spiritual eye masks:

Parenting: Are we disciplining with love, or have we bought into cultural narratives that avoid correction? Proverbs 13:24 reminds us that those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

Health: Jesus suffered so we could be healed—physically, mentally, and emotionally. When's the last time you took a real break or prioritized your wellbeing?

Relationships: Stop comparing your marriage to others' highlight reels. Remove the blinders and see the wonderful spouse God has given you.

Finances: Tithing isn't Old Testament legalism—it's New Testament obedience. Are you comfortable ignoring this biblical principle?

Dreams and Talents: God hasn't called you to bury your gifts. Whether you're crafty with technology or passionate about serving others, your talents are meant to bless the body of Christ.

Making the Most of Every Opportunity

What is the core message here? We can make the most of every opportunity to direct people toward God—but only if we're spiritually awake.

This requires more than Sunday morning attendance. It demands daily alertness to God's voice, willingness to be uncomfortable, and courage to act on what He reveals. As mothers, fathers, students, employees, and community members, we're constantly surrounded by people who need to see faith in action.

Your personal testimony—the evidence of God's transformation in your life—is the most powerful tool you have. You don't need to be perfect; you just need to be awake.

Take Action Today

Ready to remove your spiritual blinders? Here are three practical steps:

  1. Examine one area where you've been spiritually comfortable. Ask God to show you where you need to wake up.

  2. Share your testimony with someone. Let them see the real evidence of God's work in your life.

  3. Commit to spiritual disciplines that keep you alert—daily Bible reading, prayer, and fellowship with other believers.

Don't miss another divine opportunity. God is calling you to open your eyes, stand up, and live fully awake to His purposes.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are faithful, loving, and merciful. God, remove the spiritual blinders from my eyes. Wake me up to the opportunities You place before me each day. Give me courage to direct others toward You—not through perfection, but through authentic faith. Help me live alert, engaged, and fully alive to Your calling. In Jesus' name, Amen.
